NCSG Members and Friends,

We will begin our series of FREE NCSG Social Media Workshops with one focussing on using Facebook to promote yourself and your art.

Primary presenter will be NCSG member Tonya Powell, with assistance from NCSG co-president Beth Wicker.

The workshop will be held at TechShop RDU on Monday, March 5 from 6:30 - 8:30 PM.

Pre-registration is REQUIRED so we do not over-fill our space! We will be in the computer lab (not in our regular meeting room). Since we want to begin promptly at 6:30 please plan to arrive at least 10 minutes early so you have time to get set up and be ready to go!

Please pre-register with Beth Wicker at ruralart@earthlink.net before Feb. 22. If there are still spaces available at that point they will be offered to TechShopRDU members.

We are meeting Saturday, February 4, 2012, at COA, Professional Arts Building, Manteo, NC at 10:00 am. We will begin with a short business meeting, have a demonstration by Irene Schindler on a great pin-back that she uses and some information on earring forging and marketing tips. We will break for lunch (bring your own or we can go out to one of the places near by the campus). Then back to the studio to work.

Kathryn said that if we wanted to enamel our beads we could do that on Sunday. The cost for the workshop is $100.00.

Things to remember are that we will not have a studio space, so no fire or need for ventilation but there are several techniques we can do: sawing, riveting, forming, and chain making, (bring your tools and supplies for applications).

November Meeting

The November Guild meeting will take place at Dianne and Larry's Studio. My studio will be used for demonstrations and for specific purposes (It is 6' x 24') and Larry's Studio will be used for general work.

Dianne has a kiln, torch, bench shear, sand blaster, and flex shaft. I know we are all looking forward to hearing what Hilary, Joanne and Valda learned at the Pullen. Dianne can do a sandblasting demo if the group is interested. Does anyone have a technique they would like to demonstrate or one they would like to learn about?

We will start our time together at 10:00 am with a short meeting held in the house. Have our demonstrations next followed by lunch. We can eat lunch at one of the local restaurants or do a brown bag lunch. Then it is work time. Bring you latest success or pain in the neck piece.

The Artist's Response to Irene

Riverwalk Gallery and Arts Center is excited to announce it's first ever public call for artwork.
After Hurricane Irene came through Eastern North Carolina a couple of weeks ago, we all know first hand the hardships many people have had to endure because Mother Nature decided to focus her energy on our coast. Because of this, and because we know artists are strong people, and we know art helps people verbalize their feelings, and is a great way to unleash anxiety, and is a great way to relax, and is a way to try to bring our lives back in focus; we are going to host a new exhibit in the gallery for the month of October.
This exhibit will be called " Inspired by Irene".
All types of artwork will be accepted; paintings, sculpture, drawings, jewelry, pottery, photography, etc. We aren't looking for documentation; we are looking for art that was created because you wanted to voice how you were feeling during or after this huge force of Nature came roaring through Eastern North Carolina. The deadline for receiving artwork is on or before September 30 at 12noon.
You can call the gallery at 974-0400 or email us if you have any questions. We are excited about this new venture and are really looking forward to start to recieving your artwork that's answers our call.

Change for September Meeting

I heard from Stan Harmon yesterday. He and Marty like many of us suffered loss of trees and had dock damage but otherwise did well during Irene.

However, due to a serioius family illness he and Marty request a change in the month that we will meet at their home and studio in New Bern. Stan is also delaying returning to Peru.

We were all excited and ready to play in glass, be at their beautiful home and work in Stan's studio but we know send our best wishes for returned health to their family member.

Pocosin Needs Our Help

In the time of trouble we join together; remember the toothpick lesson. One or two toothpicks can be easily broken but a whole group of toothpicks cannot.
Pocosin Arts took a terrible beating in the storm. Larry and I were there today for just a short time and it is heart breaking to see how exhausted Feather and Karen are. Much had to be thrown away, most of the contents of the lower floor still needs to be disinfected. The alley needs to be cleaned up to lift the spirits of the town and Pocosin Arts. If you can help, the fun will begin again at 9:00 am tomorrow.

Off Off Pink Stain

I have been working with some brass and the curse of the pink stain has meant a lot of scrubbing and sanding. I had remembered a super pickle that Dennis French had told me about but I could not find my notes.

Yeah! I found a source and wanted to share it with you.

Super Pickle for Removing Pink (copper skin) on Brass

Mix 2 parts hydrogen peroxide (3%) solution with the same amount of Sparex and 1 part water. Pickle first in plain Sparex then soak in hydrogen peroxide solution for 5 to 10 minutes to remove the pink skin often remaining on pickled brass. Exposure to sunlight will weaken the solution.

EASTERN N.C. ARTS COUNCILS SEEK APPLICATIONS FOR REGIONAL ARTIST PROJECT GRANTS

Artists in 29 counties are eligible for the regional awards

July 13, 2011 — The Pocosin Arts Folk School is seeking applications for the 2011–2012 Regional Artist Project Grants. The deadline to apply is Friday, Sept. 16, 2011.

The Regional Artists Project program is managed through a partnership with the North Carolina Arts Council and 29 local arts councils throughout Eastern North Carolina working as a consortium. Counties include Beaufort, Bertie, Camden, Carteret, Chowan, Craven, Currituck, Dare, Duplin, Edgecombe, Gates, Greene, Halifax, Hertford, Hyde, Jones, Lenoir, Martin, Nash, Northampton, Onslow, Pamlico, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Pitt, Tyrrell, Washington, Wayne, and Wilson counties.
Residents in these counties are eligible to apply for grants which provide financial support to artists in all disciplines, such as visual art/craft, music composition, film/video, literature/playwriting and choreography/dance, and at any stage of their career. Types of fundable projects include the creation of new work; purchase of equipment and materials and professional development workshops. Complete funding guidelines and applications are available at http://www.pittcountyarts.org/grants/ .

Since 1985, the state Arts Council has provided funds for the Regional Artists Project program to support professional artists. The regional consortium of eastern North Carolina arts councils matches the N.C. Arts Council to create a pool of funds for the artists. In 2010-2011, more than $200,000 was awarded to 142 artists statewide for projects that advanced individual artistic development. In the East, grant awards to artists generally range from $500 to $1,000, and follow a competitive application and review process.
Pitt County Arts Council at Emerge serves as lead arts council for the Eastern North Carolina Regional Consortium and manages the application and review process. Application forms and grant guidelines are available on their website at http://www.pittcountyarts.org/grants . Applications must be received no later than Friday, September 16, 2011 delivered to Pocosin Arts Folk School at 201 Main St. Columbia, NC or to the Pitt County Arts Council at Emerge located at 404 S. Join Kathryn Osgood on September 19-21 at the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts- as she teaches a dynamic class in Color, Texture and Form: Working with Opaques

Add dimension to your work as we explore the relationship of color, texture and form using the wonderful color palette of opaque enamels. In this workshop, we will create dimensional forms in copper using dapping, die forming and fold forming techniques as a starting point. We will then manipulate these forms further by texturing and piercing metal.

Using opaque enamels we will experiment with shading, stencils, sgraffito, over firing, sugar firing and the use of seed beads to build up a rich surface texture on our pieces. Techniques for setting finished enamel pieces using cold connections will be covered.

On Saturday & Sunday, August 20th & 21st, Pullen Arts Center is hosting “Tell Your Story: A Narrative Brooch”, a specialty jewelry workshop with visiting artist Kathryn Osgood.

In this workshop we will use imagery to create a brooch that tells a story. Students will explore various techniques to incorporate images in their work including image transfer, etching, sawing and piercing, and painting and drawing on enamel. We will fabricate a pin finding to complete our brooch. Bring images that inspire you and photos of people or places that are significant to you and be ready to create a brooch that tells your story.
Osgood is an assistant professor for the College of the Albemarle Professional Crafts Jewelry Program. She is a jeweler, enamellist and metalsmith, whose work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. Osgood received her MFA in jewelry and metal design from East Carolina University in Greenville, NC. Her work is published in 1000 Rings, The Art of Enameling, Contemporary Enameling: Art and Technique, 500 Earrings, 500 Necklaces, 500 Enameled Objects and The Art of Jewelry: Wood.

COA Jewelry Workshop: Etching and Surface Design for Metal

Saturday & Sunday July 23 -24, 9 am to 4 pm at COA Roanoke Island Campus Professional Arts Building in Manteo.

In this workshop, students will learn a simple etching process that will result in the creation of etched brass plates that can be used in roll printing silver or in the fabrication of earrings, pendants, or bracelets. Transfer your drawings, rubber stamp designs or black and white patterns to brass or copper and etch them into the surface of your metal sheet. Add texture, pattern, and surface interest to your jewelry. All skill levels are welcome. Tuition for the two day class is $100. To register call 475-9250 or 475-9251. Making Metal Beads – June 25 and 26 (Saturday and Sunday) 9 am to 4 pm.

Join us at the COA jewelry studio in Manteo for this two day metal bead making workshop. During the class, students will create beads working with sterling, copper, and brass to use as a focal point for a unique necklace. We will explore techniques including roll printing, stamping, soldering, riveting, stone setting and piercing to create one-of-a-kind beads. Jesse Bert, guest artist ECU alumni who now resides in Mexico, is giving a public lecture Wednesday, March 30, at 7 PM in the pottery studio at Pocosin Arts School in Columbia, NC. Jesse does beautiful work using found objects, ivory, wood and connecting them all with gorgeous rivets. Try to come if you can!

Session 2 Boot Camp

Session 2 Metals/Business Boot Camp has completed its first week! The five participants vary in age, goals and experience but already have developed a camaraderie in the studio. We've covered the basics of sawing, filing, sanding and riveting this week, finishing with a day of lapidary taught by guild member Bruce Barnett. Next week, Jesse Bert from Mexico will be teaching us tool making, chasing and connecting dissimilar materials. I believe he'll be giving a public lecture and will let you know the particulars as soon as I know for sure.

Just got home from a wonderful weekend in Columbia at Kathryn Osgood's Cloisonne Workshop. There were only 3 students but that meant more kiln time for all of us. Made some wonderful enamels - now I need to set them. We did a little experimenting - ask Annemarie about raku firing enamels. Thanks Kathryn for a great time.

Guild Group Project - 100 Hammers

Valda has heard from the 100 Hammers project and they are happy that we're interested in getting involved. If you go to the link, www.100hammers.com you can find out some basic information and look at the hammers that are left. It seems that most of the hammers are still "being used" and apparently, the project doesn't really want the hammer back, but the participant is encouraged to pass the hammer to someone else or keep it. If more than one hammer is desired, the cost (which covers mailing costs) will be adjusted for one package.

So - the questions everyone needs to answer are the following:

1. Do we rent a hammer or not?

2. If we rent a hammer, do we want one or more?

3. Whether we rent a hammer or not, do we make the project from new materials or do we go on a type of scavenger hunt (either walking around Columbia, taking a walk on the beach, going to a hardware or flew market) to get materials? (The artist 100 Hammers is memorializing apparently was big on reusing/repurposing items.)

We could also cut up the hammer and everyone use a part of the hammer itself for their piece!

4. Do we make one collaborative project, individual projects, or individual projects that go together in a wall hanging or around a frame?

5. Do we make our piece(s) in one afternoon during our meeting or take a month until the next meeting? Or do both?

So let the discussion begin. We could just decide on getting one or more hammers during this discussion, then at the next meeting, talk further about what we want to do with our hammer.

Also, I will be sending out minutes tonight. Let me know if you don't get them - I may not have your e-mail.

March meeting

Even though Pocosin has a pottery workshop the first Saturday in March, I think we should still try to meet that day. Hilary mentionned that we could do the business portion of the meeting upstairs. For the program, I'd like everyone bring their latest project or one they are working on so people can give feedback. Also, Valda wanted people to bring their pieces from Kathryn's last color workshop (especially the resin pieces). I'm working on a location to do the soldering demo of using Krazy Glue and tracing paper to hold multiple metal pieces together to solder at once (the tip Michael Dale Bernard dropped at the ECU metal symposium). I also have some project ideas for everyone interested to participate. Let me know if anyone else has any ideas or comments.

I think Joanne started the argument by claiming her breakout session was the best on Saturday morning, of course, Lin, Annemarie and I all thought ours was the best. I had just come out of Dan Dicaprio's session on techniques for using wood in jewelry designs, surely nothing could be better. However, after taking Ken Bova's session on grinding minerals to create your own colored pigments with recipes on how to use the pigments in various applications, I was just as ready to believe Ken's session was equal to Dan's session. Surely, the best was passed and Sunday could just be expected to be okay.

Sunday brought equally wonderful sessions by Tom Muir on how to constuct catches and Mi Sook Hur gave us instruction in four different mold processes in just two hours.

Of course I could not take advantage of all that was offered, Joanne can tell you about Michael Bernard's Power Coating and Lin and Annemarie can share Lisa Johnson's Found Objects in Cast Porcelain.

Dear Dianne,

It is an exciting time here at Pocosin Arts in the metals studio and I am working hard to gear up for the students that will arrive Monday morning for our first class of session one. I have copied your questions below and will include the answer after each one.

Does the Metals Guild still have use of the metal cabinet and was it moved into the metals studio?

The Metals Guild cabinet has not been moved into the studio and is still available for the guild to use. The torch is in the metals studio for safekeeping awaiting it’s new tank holder.

On Saturday, do we have use of the metals studio space?

The metals studio is in final prep for classes to begin on Monday and not ready for use.

What pieces of equipment are available to us?

Bruce has requested a flexible shaft and we will make one available for guild use at the meeting.

Are policies in place for studio hours beyond the guild meeting time?

Studio use policy is currently being established and revised for all of the Pocosin Arts studios including the new metals studio. We are working with other art centers similar to Pocosin Arts and reviewing their policies and talking with them about what works and what does not. We have not yet finished this process but after we do it will be presented for approval at the next Pocosin Arts Board meeting.

Who will open and close for us on Saturday?

I will be at Pocosin Arts on Saturday for the guild meeting and will give the guild members a tour of the new studio as well as an update on the February Metals show/sale.

What can we do to help?

Your patience as we finish putting the studio together as well as crafting a studio use policy is greatly appreciated.

We finally got to give Hilary her mobile. She was so surpised! Two of the sail makers where not able to be there but Hilary knew right away which of the beautiful sails they made.

Gallery Walk in Washington, NC

Larry and I went to Washington for the Gallery Walk in support of Valda. We had a great time and visited several galleries. The Mixed Media show at the Lone Leaf Gallery was excellent but there were excellent works to see at each of the galleries.

Valda belongs to a co-op gallery, Riverview Gallery, that is a great space that shows off the artworks well. Valda had a nice showing of her work. Thanks, Valda for inviting us to experience the Gallery Walk.

I left a few dollars in exchange for a great felted neck scarf at the Artisan's Gallery. Hope your day was spent in peace and joy, Dianne

Tim Lazure Workshops - Which would you prefer?

I would appreciate your input in scheduling a workshop with Tim Lazure for the fall of 2010 (perhaps late September or early November). Here is what we are thinking about having him teach:
1) Vessel (forming) raising
